So my THURSDAYS THOUGHTS, derives from my recent readings on the effects of trauma on caregivers. Doctors, nurses, family caregivers police officers, firemen/women etc. Of course my primary focus is on how it has affected mental health providers as this is the area i am more knowledgeable about. One book i read a few years ago defines these effects as “Vicarious Trauma”. A past intern gave me a book as a parting gift and i have extremely engrossed in this book because it is so well written with quotes, cartoons and letters from providers on their experience in trauma work. The book is called “Trauma Stewardship”. A must read especially for those who have been in the field for some time. Today’s quote may also be helpful to share with clients. All this said, this book is where i found today’s THURSDAYS THOUGHTS.

“Chance has never satisfied the hopes of suffering people. Action, self-reliance, the vision of self and the future have been the only means by which the oppressed have seen and realized the light of their own freedom”

You may want to add military personnel as well. This population is often ignored, but incidents like the one occurring at Fort Hood yesterday is a sad, painful reminder.
