IN THE WAKE OF TRAGEDIES, DON’T FORGET THE CHILDREN

Today I spoke with my middle school girls from my after-school program, to see how they felt about the death of Michael Brown and the verdict. These young ladies ages 12-14, are all from undeserved communities. I was not prepared for the outburst of emotions which included anger, pain sadness and rage they were feeling. I did this at the end of group and pretty much had to just let them vent. It was overwhelming and powerful. What was also evident, is the fear for their lives and lives of the male members of their families.Talk to your children about these occurrences. We sometimes try to shelter them from the pain, but they too need an outlet regarding what they seen,have heard and in some cases have experienced
